NQOH: XML is so ‘00, JSON is so ‘10, binary is the way to go!
During these 15 minutes we will take stroll along the past and present of instant messaging: Starting with ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, skipping MSN, SMS/MMS, sidestepping to Jabber, and then on to WhatsApp and Signal. Discussing how each uses a binary protocol and what we can learn from them when deciding ourself on using libraries such as Protobuf, Avro, and Thrift.
Laurens is a senior software engineer with a focus on designing complex systems and a keen interest in security. His interests range from automatic code generation, to encryption and designing highly available systems. In his off time he likes to play with complex games and find ways to (automatically) ‘solve’ them.
